This past weekend, the peaceful surroundings of Trelay Holiday Park came alive with feathers, fascination, and fun as 56 owners and their families—including 20 excited children—gathered for an unforgettable on-park event with Screech Owl Sanctuary. The acclaimed wildlife rescue and education centre brought along five incredible owls—each with a unique story and role in the ecosystem—as well as a cheeky polecat named Stinky Pete, who stole the show!

From the majestic Eurasian Eagle Owl with its enormous wingspan to the elusive Barn Owl and the tiny but fierce Little Owl, guests got a close-up look at some of the UK’s most captivating birds of prey. Children and adults alike were mesmerised, not just by the owls’ beauty and grace, but by the fascinating facts shared by the knowledgeable team from Screech Owl Sanctuary.

🧠 Wildlife Wisdom: What We Learned

The educational display wasn’t just entertaining—it was deeply enriching. Visitors discovered:

  • Barn Owls can hunt by sound alone, thanks to asymmetrical ear placement.
  • Owls have specially adapted feathers that allow them to fly in near-total silence.
  • The Little Owl, despite its size, is a fierce predator and a vital part of controlling small mammal populations.
  • Polecats like Stinky Pete play an important role in maintaining ecological balance by preying on rodents.

Children were especially engaged, with many asking questions, holding replica owl skulls, and even trying on falconry gloves under supervision. It was a brilliant opportunity to foster curiosity and respect for nature at an early age.

🌿 Nature and Regenerative Tourism: Why It Matters

Events like these highlight the positive power of regenerative tourism—a sustainable approach that seeks not only to protect the environment but to actively improve it. By connecting holiday homeowners with Cornwall’s natural wildlife and teaching the role these species play in a balanced ecosystem, Trelay supports both environmental education and a deeper appreciation for the landscapes we call home (even if just for the holidays!).

Encouraging awareness of local wildlife contributes to a stronger sense of place, helping owners become stewards of the countryside, not just visitors. This aligns perfectly with Cornwall’s wider efforts to promote eco-conscious travel and sustainable rural tourism.

🦅 Looking Ahead

Trelay Holiday Park remains committed to creating unique, meaningful events that inspire and connect. A huge thank you to the team at Screech Owl Sanctuary for sharing their time, expertise, and animal ambassadors with us.

Whether you came to see the stunning owls, meet Stinky Pete, or just enjoy the community atmosphere, this event was a reminder of how special our surroundings truly are—and why they’re worth protecting.
